The Rev. Dr. Rowena White, Canon
Born in California, Rowena was raised in Arkansas and Mississippi. As a child and teen, she often interpreted for her deaf mother. She attended medical school in Jackson, married and began her residency in psychiatry in Florida. After two years, she interrupted her residency to begin her family and enjoyed being a "stay at home mother" for several years. She finished her psychiatry residency in Little Rock and did a fellowship in Child Psychiatry while continuing to raise her two children as a single mom.
Participating in a Spiritual Direction group at the Episcopal cathedral in Little Rock was a life-changing experience of learning to praise God while listening for God's voice. Experiencing a call to ordained ministry a few years later, Rowena attended the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Austin, TX and was ordained Deacon, and later Priest in 1995. She worked for eight years as a hospital chaplain at Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge; the last six years where she was a chaplain in their Addiction Recovery 12 Step Program. She continues to be an advocate for 12 step groups.
Before coming full time on staff at St. Mark's in 2011, she was the Director of Student Mental Health at LSUHSC and did supply preaching around the Diocese. Having been trained in Spiritual Direction, she continues to enjoy this aspect of ministry, along with the teaching and supervision in Stephen Ministry.
On a personal level, she enjoys her two granddaughters, ages 6 and 11, who live nearby. Her daughter is a teacher at the Montessori School here; her son is a hospitalist in Camden, Arkansas. Rowena is an outdoor and Nature enthusiast. She loves walking, canoeing and traveling, or road trips, to see more of God's amazing creation!
